"This was a trip we had wanted to do and sharing it with Isobel and Bill certainly improved the experience. We really appreciated the company and help that travelling together provided and would recommend this to anyone considering this route if they are travelling as a couple. The additional time meant that we were able to stop off and enjoy visiting a couple of places as well. We enjoyed the Wigan flight. By leaving at 08.30 we had done the 21 locks of the flight plus the additional two on the Leigh branch by about 16.30 when we stopped for the night at the moorings in Dover.
We found sufficient pubs open during the trip for a few meals out including the Rose of Lancaster near Chadderton where we stopped after our long haul out of Manchester.
We were happy to stay in New Islington for a couple of nights while we stayed in Manchester and were able to make use of their facilities at a price, (£25.00 a night). In order to stay we did have to book ahead as the site manager had to move a boat for us and we needed to breach up during our stay. The last time we stayed at the marina in 2014 the place had fewer boats and was generally under developed with space to moor everywhere and was free to visitors. Now both the number of boats has increased as well as the modern houses and apartments on site. One of their new kit three story houses with virtually no garden costs about £520,000. The site was buzzing during the day and was so much busier with residents and locals although they do lock the outside gate and move one of the bridges to reduce the footfall crossing the site from 20.00 to 07.30/08.00. It was quiet at night.
In Manchester: Ordsall Hall - a Tudor mansion worth seeing. Wigan flight fun to do "
